Lelwica Wins Wartburg Heptathlon, Schaffer Posts PR at La Crosse

WAVERLY, Iowa – Saint John's senior Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) won the heptathlon at Wartburg's Last-Chance Meet on Saturday, March 8.

The two-day meet served as the last opportunity for student-athletes to qualify for next weekend's (March 14-15) NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in Rochester, N.Y.

The top 20 marks/times nationally in each individual event and the top 12 in each relay earn their respective trip to nationals. The entrants are expected to be announced tomorrow evening (Sunday, March 9) on www.ncaa.com.

Lelwica entered the day in first place with 2,736 points and recorded personal bests in Saturday's three events to finish with a total of 5,063, which topped his previous high of 4,836 registered on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at Division II MSU-Mankato's Mark Schuck Open Multi. Senior teammate Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) entered the weekend 13th nationally with 4,923 points to win last week's MIAC heptathlon.

Lelwica won the day's first two events, the 60-meter hurdles (8.54) and pole vault (4.20 meters), and placed second in the 1,000 meters (2:46.47). His time in the final event was nearly five seconds faster than his previous PR.

Senior Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.), meanwhile, finished second out of 10 participants in the long jump with a (non-wind aided) personal-best mark of 7.21 meters on his sixth and final attempt at Wisconsin-La Crosse's Final Qualifier. The distance vaulted past his previous season-high of 7.06 meters.
