Johnnies Provide Strong Showing at Gopher Classic

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's recorded 20 top-10 finishes at Division I Minnesota's Gopher Classic on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Senior Jackson McDowell (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe), the reigning MIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, continued his winning ways with a first-place mark of 2.01 meters in the high jump to lead the Johnnies.

Senior Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) was next with a third-place mark, his first attempt of the day, in the long jump (6.93 meters) and was also sixth, third among NCAA Division III student-athletes, in the triple jump (12.95 meters).

Junior Owen Montreuil (Jordan, Minn.) finished third in the 800 meters (1:56.84) and junior Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) was close behind in fifth (1:57.05). Three other Johnnies crossed the finish line ninth-11th: sophomore Max McCoy (Bennington, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) in ninth (2:01.02), senior Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy) in 10th (2:01.55) and sophomore Lars Molenkamp (Almere, Netherlands/Oostvaarders College) in 11th (2:02.13).

Freshman Max Reis (Fargo, N.D./Spectrum) placed fifth, behind two unattached participants and two others from Division II Concordia-St. Paul, in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.98 seconds. He recorded a season-best time of 6.93 seconds to take fourth out of 51 sprinters in the prelims.

Sophomore Andrew Withuski (Wahpeton, N.D.) led three Johnnies in the pole vault's top 10 in fifth place (4.27 meters), while juniors Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) and Josh Johnston followed in sixth (4.12 meters) and ninth (3.97 meters), respectively.

Sophomore Wyatt Witschen (Monticello, Minn.) claimed sixth, first among Division III competitors, in the 400-meter dash (51.56) and sophomore Matt Hansen (Longmont, Colo./Niwot) was sixth in the long jump (6.39 meters) and 12th overall, eighth among Division III sprinters, in the 200-meter dash (23.58).

Senior Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) tied for seventh in the high jump (1.90 meters), while sophomore Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) and freshman Collin Berg (Buffalo, Minn.) were seventh (8:58.27) and ninth (9:19.74), respectively, in the 3,000 meters.

Senior Joe Gathje (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) placed 10th, fourth among Division III runners, in the mile run (4:34.78) and two sophomores – Bangaly Kaba (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) and Connor O'Brien (Belle Plaine, Minn.) – were 10th in the triple jump (12.18 meters) and high jump (1.85 meters), respectively.

The Johnnies' 4x400-meter relay (Montreuil, Witschen, Cooper Smith, St. Peter) was fifth (3:29.17).

SJU returns home to host an invitational at 11 a.m. next Saturday, Feb. 15, in the Donald McNeely Spectrum.
