Saint Benedict and Saint John's host the 2025 MIAC Indoor Championships this Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 27-March 1, in the Donald McNeely Spectrum. The meet begins with the pentathlon at 2 p.m. (the first part of the heptathlon at 2:20 p.m.). A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's won three events and collected 28 top-eight finishes last Friday (Feb. 21) at Division II MSU-Mankato's Maverick Open.

A trio of seniors provided SJU's individual wins. Jackson McDowell (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) won the high jump with a height of 1.98 meters and classmates Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) and Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) tied for seventh (1.83 meters).

Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) took first place in the long jump with a distance of 6.89 meters and was followed in second place by sophomore sprinter Max Reis (West Fargo, N.D./Spectrum), who recorded a mark of 6.88 meters in his event debut. Sophomore Matt Hansen (Longmont, Colo./Niwot) was seventh (6.29 meters). Reis also claimed third, first among Division III sprinters, in the 60-meter dash (6.97).

Four Johnnies finished in the top eight in the 1,000 meters, led by Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy) by 0:00.25 ahead of sophomore Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River), 2:32.72-2:32.97. Junior Owen Montreuil (Jordan, Minn.) was fourth (2:33.34) and senior Joe Gathje (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) was eighth (2:40.21).

Sophomore Wyatt Witschen (Monticello, Minn.) took second with a season-best time of 51.31 seconds in the 400-meter dash and classmate Lars Molenkamp (Almere, Netherlands/Oostvaarders College) was second in the 800 meters (2:02.06). Another sophomore, Connor O'Brien (Belle Blaine, Minn.), was behind Molenkamp in eighth (2:09.23).

Freshman Collin Berg (Buffalo, Minn.) was second in the mile run in 4:32.90, while senior Ethan Leonard (Chaska, Minn.) and sophomore Peyton Martinek (Coon Rapids, Minn.) followed him in fourth (4:35.05) and fifth (4:35.20), respectively.

Four Johnnies qualified for the eight-man final in the 60-meter hurdles, led by Lelwica in third place with a time of 8.60 seconds. Freshman Jacob Sterk (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) and Thurk were fifth (8.98) and sixth (9.01), while freshman Bailey Evans (Breckenridge, Minn.) was eighth (9.31). Sterk and freshman Evan Raske (Becker, Minn./Monticello) were fifth (1:30.72) and sixth (1:31.35) in the 600 meters.

Sophomore Bangaly Kaba (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) was fourth in the triple jump (12.82 meters) and junior Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) and sophomore Andrew Withuski (Wahpeton, N.D.) tied at 4.09 meters for fifth and sixth places in the pole vault. Sophomore Kieran Murnan (Lakeville, Minn./Holy Angels) claimed sixth in the 200-meter dash (22.77) and freshman Grady Minnerath (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) was seventh, first among Division III throwers, with a season-best toss of 14.27 meters in the shot put.

Minnesota Snowshoe Open
Three Johnnies raced Friday at Division I Minnesota's Snowshoe Open in Minneapolis. Junior Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) led the way in fourth, first among Division III runners, with a season-best time of 4:20.39 in the mile run. Senior Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) claimed eighth (8:42.69), third among Division III participants, and junior Jacob Malecha (Lonsdale, Minn./New Prague) was 14th (8:57.47) out of 36 runners in the 3,000 meters.

LAST YEAR'S MEET: SJU finished second out of 11 teams at last year's MIAC Indoor Championships held at St. Olaf. Bethel won its second-consecutive MIAC indoor title with 164 points, followed by the Johnnies (143 points), the host Oles (107) and St. Scholastica (95). All told, SJU won a program-record five individual championships and totaled 16 All-MIAC (top-three individually) performances.

Kevin Arthur '24 won the 60-meter dash in 6.79 seconds and also brought home his 13th All-MIAC honor (seventh indoors) with a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash. The MIAC championship was Arthur's seventh overall (five individual and two relay) and first indoors. 

Joe Charbonneau '24 won his third MIAC title in the pole vault – his second-consecutive indoors – with a height of 4.65 meters. Schaffer, like Charbonneau, won his third-consecutive conference championship in the long jump – and second-straight indoors – with a leap of 6.94 meters on his final attempt. In the 800 meters, senior Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy) stood atop the podium for the first time in the event indoors with a time of 1:55.33 and became the first Johnnie to win the event indoors in 10 years (Thomas Feichtinger '16 in 2014). Allen followed up his 800-meter title with an incredible comeback to win the 1,000 meters in 2:30.25. He started the final lap in fifth place and sprinted the final 200 meters in 28.27 seconds to earn the win – the first by a Johnnie in the indoor 1,000 meters in program history – by 0:00.10.

Senior Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) recorded the Johnnies' first All-MIAC honor of the meet, his second-consecutive in the event, with a third-place finish in the heptathlon. 

Jaeden Frost '24 earned his second-straight All-MIAC honor in the weight throw with a personal-best distance of 16.78 meters for third place and also placed third in the shot put. He posted a mark of 15.16 meters on his first attempt of the day, which held for his sixth All-MIAC distinction and third indoors.

Elijah Wade '24 fell half an inch short on his final jump to earn runner-up performance in the triple jump with a jump of 13.71 meters. Schaffer, fresh off his long jump title, registered his second All-MIAC honor of the meet and fourth of his career (third indoors) with a third-place mark of 13.57 meters. 

McDowell earned All-MIAC honors with a runner-up finish in the high jump by clearing a season-best height of 1.96 meters on his second attempt.

SJU's 4x200-meter relay (Emanuel Popoca, Wyatt Witschen, Cooper Smith, Arthur) was All-MIAC with a second-place time of 1:29.89.

Three Johnnies earned points in the pole vault in succession: Guth in fifth (4.45 meters); Dan Eickhoff '24 in sixth (4.45 meters); and Withuski in seventh (4.20 meters).

Senior Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) placed fourth in the heptathlon (4,587 points) for the second-straight season, while Logan Hennen '24 tallied two team points in seventh (4,109 points). 

St. Peter followed Allen with a fifth-place time (2:31.69) in the 1,000 meters (2:31.69) and Montreuil took eighth in the 600 meters (1:23.47).

Two Johnnies added to the team total in the weight throw as senior Joe Mensen (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray) placed seventh (15.02 meters) and Kaleb Dewall '24 followed in eighth (14.82 meters). Hansen finished eighth in the long jump with a jump of 6.27 meters, which was posted on his first Friday night.

The Johnnies' distance medley relay (Max McCoy, Ryan Conzemius, Owen Montreuil, Vincent Kaluza) ended Saturday night with a fourth-place finish in 10:25.66 and the 4x400-meter relay (Witschen, Montreuil, Conzemius, Smith) closed the meet in fourth (3:26.94).

IN THE MIAC: The Johnnies enter the MIAC Championships meet with 31 top-10 marks/times in the conference, including 14 in the top five.
