Early Deficit Too Much for SJU Hockey in Quarterfinal Loss, 4-3

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Concordia-Moorhead built a 3-0 lead and held on to top Saint John's hockey 4-3 in the MIAC quarterfinal on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

The Cobbers (12-11-3, 7-6-3 MIAC) advance to face top-seeded Gustavus Adolphus (14-9-2, 10-4-2 MIAC) at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 1, in St. Peter.

Joe Harguindeguy gave CC a 1-0 lead on a shot from the right faceoff circle 6:55 into the game and Blaise Miller made it a two-goal game at the 14:06 mark when his hard-charging attempt trickled between the leg pads of senior goaltender Bailey Huber (Mahtomedi, Minn.). Tucker Skime tallied the Cobbers' first of two power-play goals on the night 3:01 into the second period for a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore forward Cam Boche (Lakeville, Minn.) erased the shutout for SJU (11-14-1, 8-7-1 MIAC) when he put away a rebound from junior defenseman Mason Campbell's (Rosemount, Minn.) shot on goal 1:11 after Skime and cut the deficit to 3-2 with his ninth goal of the season, during a 5-on-3 power play, at the 11:25 mark of the second.

Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe answered, however, with what proved to be the game-winning goal on the power play with only 4.2 seconds left in the frame. CC entered the postseason at 14.3 percent (13-for-91) on the man advantage and ended the night 2-for-7 against SJU's penalty kill – ranked second in NCAA Division III – at 90.4 percent (67-for-73).

Senior forward Spencer Rudrud (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made it a one-goal game with his eighth goal of the season off a direct faceoff win from classmate Cody Carlson (Buffalo, Minn.) with 5:46 left in regulation.

The Johnnies had a 6-on-4 advantage on the ice, thanks to a Cobber penalty and Huber off the ice, for the game's final 1:33 but could not score the equalizer. Huber finished with 36 saves as CC posted a 40-29 margin in shots, including 17-9 on the power play.
