COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's track and field won three events and recorded 17 top-five finishes at its CSB/SJU Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 15, in the Donald McNeely Spectrum.
Senior
Jackson McDowell (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) won the high jump at 2.03 meters and senior
Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) took first in the long jump with a season-best mark of 7.06 meters. Freshman
Anthony Sletta (St. James, Minn.) followed Schaffer in third (6.72 meters).
Junior
Owen Montreuil (Jordan, Minn.) won the 600 meters in 1:22.70, followed by senior
Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy) in third (1:24.67) and sophomore
Max McCoy (Bennington, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) in fifth (1:25.59).
Freshman
Max Reis (West Fargo, N.D./Spectrum) won the 60-meter dash prelim with a season-best time of 6.92 seconds but did not compete in the final.
Sophomore
Wyatt Witschen (Monticello, Minn.) finished second in the 400-meter dash (51.60), while sophomore
Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) and senior
Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) claimed second (4:24.68) and third (4:28.07), respectively, in the mile run.
Junior
Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) led three Johnnies in succession with a second-place time of 2:31.98 in the 1,000 meters, followed by
Lars Molenkamp (Almere, Netherlands/Oostvaarders College) and senior
Joe Gathje (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) in third (2:37.00) and fourth (2:39.07), respectively.
Sophomore
Andrew Withuski (Wahpeton, N.D.) tied for third in the pole vault with a height of 4.25 meters and junior
Kole Guth (St. Peter, Minn.) tied for fifth (4.10 meters). Senior
Joe Mensen (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray) took fifth with a season-best toss in the weight throw (14.95 meters).
SJU's 4x400-meter relay (Gathje,
Aaron Freier, Molenkamp,
Adam Marable) was second (3:37.03) and the 4x200-meter relay (
Matt Hansen, Witschen,
Andy White, Reis) was fifth (1:32.71).
The Johnnies travel south to compete at the MSU-Mankato Invitational – the final tune-up before the 2025 MIAC Indoor Championships Feb. 27-March 1 in Collegeville – at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21.
