McDowell Wins High Jump, Lelwica Second in Heptathlon at MSU-Mankato

MANKATO, Minn. – Five Saint John's student-athletes competed at Division II MSU-Mankato's Mark Schuck Open & Multi on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Senior Jackson McDowell (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) led the way with a win in the high jump at 2.06 meters, the eighth-best height in NCAA Division III this indoor season.

Senior Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) led four Johnnies with a second-place finish in the heptathlon (4,836 points). The score is good for 10th in Division III. The four Johnnies were the only Division III competitors in the 13-man event.

Lelwica finished in the heptathlon's top four in three events: second in both the shot put (12.49 meters) and high jump (1.92 meters), and fourth in the 1,000 meters (2:52.21).

Senior Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) finished fifth in the heptathlon with 4,545 points, while freshman Bailey Evans (Breckenridge, Minn.) and Noah Besemann (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) were 10th (4,002) and 11th (3,967), respectively. Thurk claimed third in the high jump (1.89 meters) and pole vault (3.75 meters). Besemann was second in the pole vault (4.05 meters) and Evans was sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.26).

The Johnnies compete at the Division I Minnesota Classic at 9:30 a.m. next Saturday, Feb. 8, in Minneapolis.
