DUBUQUE, Iowa – Saint John's wrestling went 1-2 at Dubuque's Sokol Wrestling Showcase on Saturday, Dec. 20.

The Johnnies fell in the opener to the host Spartans, 33-16, and dropped a narrow dual to Simpson (Iowa) 28-23 before ending the day with a convincing 42-11 victory over Schreiner (Texas).

A pair of SJU underclassmen went 3-0 with bonus-point wins on the day. Sophomore Thomas Holmquist (Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) improved his season record to 16-3 at 125 pounds with two major decisions and a technical fall, while freshman Carson Gellerman (Becker, Minn./Big Lake) tallied a pin, forfeit and technical fall to move his record to 11-1.

Sophomore Dominic Smith (Maple Grove, Minn./St. Michael's, N.M.) went 2-1, including a pair of pins, to nudge his record to 10-6 at 149 pounds.

Senior Andy Johnson (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) and junior Xavier Jones (Annandale, Minn.) both went 2-0 (a decision and pin) at 174 and 133 pounds, respectively. Sophomore Zeke Conner (Tyler, Texas/Bishop Gorman) registered two pins and freshman Isaac Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) lost his lone dual match but recorded two exhibition pins.

Dubuque (6-0 dual record) totaled six bonus-point wins, including five in the final six matches after Smith gave SJU a 10-9 lead with a pin at 149. The Spartans picked up a 10-point swing at 141 with a pin with one second remaining in the match after being down 13-4. 

The Johnnies (1-3 dual record) had a 23-16 lead over Simpson (2-3 dual record), but the Storm won the final two matches via fall to finish with five bonus-point victories. Earlier in the dual, Smith was down 12-5 but scored a reversal and a pin with 55 seconds left in the second period. SJU won all three exhibition matches following the dual via fall.

Seven of SJU's eight wins against Schreiner were of the bonus-point variety, including four pins and a tech fall.

A pair of regionally ranked wrestlers – juniors Connor Krueger (11-1 record at 133; Superior, Wis.) and Aidan Wayne (14-3 record heavyweight; Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) – did not wrestle.

The Johnnies return to the mat in the New Year with a return trip to Iowa on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 2-3. SJU visits Simpson (Iowa) for a rematch at 2 p.m. Friday in Indianola, Iowa, followed by Central's Under Armour Invitational at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Pella, Iowa.
