COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University senior tight end
Joey Gendreau (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week for the third time this season on Tuesday, Oct 14.
Gendreau earned the honor earlier this season on Sept. 16 and Sept. 30. He is the first Johnnie to achieve the distinction three times in the same season and just the third to do it three times overall, joining return specialist/wide receiver Blake Elliott '03 (once in 2002 and twice in 2003) and quarterback
Aaron Syverson '24 (once in 2023 and twice in 2024).
Gendreau became the fifth Johnnie in program history to catch four touchdown passes or more in a game with four (21, 62, 7 and 4 yards), to go along with 115 yards, on six catches in the first half of Saturday's (Oct. 11) 70-0 win over Macalester. He was named the MIAC Football Offensive Player of the Week yesterday (Oct. 13) for his performance.
He has eclipsed 100 receiving yards in four of SJU's five games this season and currently leads the MIAC in receiving touchdowns (7), and is second in receiving yards (577) and fourth in receptions (37).
Gendreau ranks 14th in NCAA Division III with an average of 117.4 receiving yards per game this season. No other tight end at any level of NCAA Football is averaging more than 86.6 receiving yards per game this fall. Gendreau is averaging 7.40 receptions per game, a mark that also leads all tight ends at any level of NCAA Football. He is tied with Luke Bodine from Division II Mary (N.D.) for the national lead among tight ends with seven touchdown receptions (Bodine has seven in seven games, Gendreau has seven in five contests).
The Johnnies (4-1, 3-1 MIAC), who are ranked as high as No. 10 nationally, travel to face Concordia (4-1, 3-1 MIAC) for a 1 p.m. kickoff this Saturday, Oct. 18, in Moorhead.
