ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision to Macalester on Saturday, Oct. 11, in St. Paul.
The two teams were stuck at a 1-1 draw until the 63rd minute when Macalester (8-4-0, 3-2-0 MIAC) took the lead for good. SJU (7-4-2, 2-4-0 MIAC) got a goal from freshman forward
Lisle Cherwien (Mound, Minn./Orono) in the first half but couldn't find the back of the net for the second equalizer in the second.
Macalester wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Saturday, claiming possession on a missed Johnnie throw in to tee up the first goal of the game just 2:56 in. A MAC defender booted the ball to midfield to force a give-and-go play to Zach Liptzin, who tapped his second of the year past freshman goalkeeper
Cole Hanson (Urbandale, Iowa).
Cherwien scored his fifth goal of the season to tie the game almost 20 minutes later after turning a long ball from senior forward
Connor Drong (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) past a defender and into the goal.
MAC's scoring leader, Kadsan Blattman, set a through-ball to an uncontested Chris Fantz in the second half for the game-winner in the 64th minute.
Three of the Johnnies' remaining five shots landed on target, but each was met by Scot goalkeeper Drew Moseman.
Hanson (2-2-0) finished with three saves between the pipes, while Cherwien, Drong and sophomore defender
Thomas Theising (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) each led the Johnnies with two shots on goal.
The Johnnies visit Carleton (7-3-2, 1-2-2 MIAC) for a 3:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, Oct. 15, in Northfield.
