Kernan-Led Johnnies Return to the Win Column at Northland, 6-3

Box Score

ASHLAND, Wis. – Saint John's hockey scored six of the game's final seven goals, including a hat trick from sophomore forward Chris Kernan (Maple Grove, Minn.), in a 6-3 win at Northland on Friday, Jan. 10.

SJU (6-6, 3-3 MIAC) overcame a sluggish start as Northland (0-14, 0-6 MIAC) gained a 2-0 lead with goals from Joe Weber (1:19) and Valerii Kneib (6:32) in the game's opening minutes.

The Johnnies, however, answered with three-straight goals to gain their first lead of the contest. Kernan cut the deficit in half 2:36 after Kneib's tally and senior captain Matt DeRosa (Alpharetta, Ga.) tied it during a delayed penalty with 6:18 left in the frame. Kernan made it 3-2 with his second goal of the night, 4-on-4, 4:43 into the second period.

The LumberJacks responded to tie the game at 3-3 with 6:52 left in the second period, but sophomore forward Jackson Bisson (Edina, Minn.) scored what proved to be the game-winner with 47 seconds left in the frame. Freshman forward Jordan Newpower (Lino Lakes, Minn.) fed Bisson just inside the blue line for a pseudo-breakaway goal, his first of the season, during a 4-on-4 (one second from a shorthanded goal).

Sophomore forward Cam Boche (Lakeville, Minn.) padded the lead with a power-play goal, his fifth tally of the season, 2:51 into the third period and Kernan completed the hat trick with an empty-netter with 1:23 remaining.

Junior goaltender Jon Howe (Chanhassen, Minn.) made 27 saves to improve his season record to 4-2.

Twelve Johnnies recorded a point or more and SJU killed off all six Northland power plays, including 1:31 of a 5-on-3 advantage in the third period.

The Johnnies complete the weekend trip with a 7 p.m. puck-drop on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Wisconsin-Superior (11-3-1, 5-1-0 WIAC).
