COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer started its 2024 season with a 1-0 loss to Wartburg on Friday, Aug. 30, at Haws Field.
A Wartburg corner kick deflected off a Johnnie defender to the top of the box where Sam McDevitt unleashed a shot to the bottom-right corner of the net for the game's lone goal 10 minutes into the second half (55:27).
The Knights registered a 13-5 advantage in shots (6-3 on goal) and a 7-2 margin in corner kicks. Wartburg reached the NCAA Division III Tournament and finished with a 12-2-6 (5-1-2 ARC) record in 2023.
Senior goalkeeper
Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made four saves in the loss for SJU, which played 23 student-athletes in the opener.
The Johnnies play host to Carroll (Wis.) at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, in Collegeville. The Pioneers out-shot Minnesota-Morris 33-5 (13-1 on goal) today in a 4-1 victory.
