A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: No. 6 Gustavus Adolphus pulled away with four goals in the second half en route to a 5-0 win over Saint John's (3-5-1, 1-3-1 MIAC) on Friday (Oct. 11) in Collegeville.
Owen Johnson scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for GAC in the 28th minute for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Joe Flory made it 2-0 with his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 59th minute and Jared Hecht – who scored all four goals for the Gusties against SJU last fall in a pair of 2-0 victories – extended the lead to 3-0 in the 73rd minute.
Matt Carlson and Nick James ended the scoring with goals 1:43 apart in the 83rd and 85th minutes, respectively.
Senior goalkeeper
Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made eight saves in the loss for SJU.
GAC posted a 17-8 advantage in shots – 13-3 on net – and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. The two teams combined for nine yellow cards.
A LOOK AT THE COBBERS: Concordia (1-9-2, 0-4-2 MIAC) recorded its second-straight draw with a 1-1 decision on Saturday (Oct. 12) at Augsburg. The result extended the Cobbers' winless streak to 11 games since they earned a 2-0 victory over Austin (Texas) in the Aug. 30 season opener in Colorado Springs, Colo. CC has scored four goals (out-scored 24-4), including an own-goal, and has been out-shot by a 173-85 margin so far this season.
LAST FALL: SJU and Concordia played to a 1-1 draw last Oct. 11 (2023) at Haws Field. Both of the game's goals were of the odd variety. The Cobbers gained an early 1-0 lead 6:43 into the contest when Siefken's pass attempt went directly to CC's Kai Black, who sent a shot inside the left post.
Concordia looked like it was about to earn its first win in Collegeville since Nov. 3, 2001, but the Johnnies tied the game on an own goal with 3:46 remaining in the game. Junior midfielder
Caden Ligman (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) lofted a pass toward two teammates at the center of the box, but a Cobber defender headed the ball backwards over his keeper and into the net.
Siefken finished with six saves as SJU posted a 21-13 advantage in shots (8-7 on net), including a 12-5 margin after halftime.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 24-10-4 against the Cobbers since 1987, including a 13-3-2 record in Moorhead.
