A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Junior forward Carter Hermanson's (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) first goal of the season with 23.8 seconds remaining gave Saint John's (3-4-1, 1-2-1 MIAC) a 2-2 draw at Augsburg last Wednesday night (Oct. 2) at Edor Nelson Field.

Charging up the right side, sophomore defender McKaid Schotzko (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) centered the ball from 30 yards out and found Hermanson at the top of the box. Hermanson stuck out his right leg to stop the ball in the air, spun to his left and chipped the ball with his left foot to the back of the net for the game-tying tally and fourth collegiate goal.

Tomas Menna gave Augsburg, which was listed seventh in last week's United Soccer Coaches Region IX rankings, a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute. Mizael Harris opened the game's scoring for the home team in the 27th minute.

Junior forward Alex Bowman (Elk River, Minn./Rogers) tied the game at 1-1 for SJU with his third goal of the season on a direct header off a corner kick from freshman defender Brendan Hainey (Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels) with 2:49 left in the first half. The goal was the 12th in 34 career games for Bowman, who missed the previous three matches due to injury and leads the team with eight points (3g/2a) this fall.

Senior goalkeeper Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made four saves in the tie. The two goals allowed were a season high.

The Auggies registered a 19-16 edge in shots (6-5 on goal), though the visitors totaled a 4-1 margin in corner kicks.

LAST-MINUTE GOAL: The Johnnies have scored 13 goals in the 90th minute since 2000. Earlier this season, junior midfielder Isaiah Silver (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored with 13 seconds left to seal the 3-0 win over St. Norbert (Wis.) on Sept. 7 in Collegeville. The latest of the 13 goals came in 2019, when Brandt Belisle found the net with three seconds left in the Johnnies' 7-2 home win over Hamline.

Hermanson's goal last week was one of just four SJU goals scored in the final minute of regulation that led to a tie or win: Joe Balder - 89:49 - at Wisconsin-Superior on Oct. 10, 2010, for a 1-1 tie; Belisle - 89:01 - at Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sept. 11, 2021, for a 2-2 tie; and Ryan Erickson - 89:31 - vs. Hamline on Oct. 17, 2021, for a 2-1 win.

A LOOK AT THE GUSTIES: Gustavus Adolphus (9-0-2, 4-0-1 MIAC) saw its eight-game win streak end with a scoreless draw to Augsburg on Oct. 5 in St. Peter. The Gusties applied most of the pressure in the first half, out-shooting the Auggies 7-3 overall, but just 1-0 on goal. Sophomore forward Joe Flory had the lone shot on goal for either team the entire game, which happened in the 25th minute. Shots were even 5-5 in the second half. Flory leads the team in goals (6) and points (12), while fifth-year midfielder Owen Johnson has a team-best four assists and is second with eight points. Senior goalkeeper Egan Bedwell has played all 990 minutes in net this season and has seven shutouts, a 0.45 GAA and a .800 save percentage (20 saves).

LAST SEASON'S MEETINGS: SJU dropped a pair of 2-0 decisions to Gustavus last fall in St. Peter, in which all four goals were scored by Jared Hecht.

SJU posted a 5-3 advantage in shots, 4-1 on goal, in the first half but the Gusties turned the tide after halftime and gained the win thanks to a pair of goals from Hecht.

Hecht's first tally came in the 68th minute, which ended Siefken's shutout streak at 294:54, and added another for good measure 1:53 later. GAC totaled a 10-4 shot margin (9-1 on net) in the second half.

Siefken finished with seven saves in the loss. Junior Sam Steil (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) made one save in the game's final 20:02.

The Johnnies ended their 2023 season with a 2-0 loss at Gustavus in the MIAC quarterfinals. The first of Hecht's goals came 4:02 into the game and the second was with 4:43 remaining.

Siefken made nine saves in the loss to finish with a 6-6-4 record. SJU posted a 9-6 advantage in shots (3-3 on goal) in the first half, but the home team totaled a 15-1 margin (8-1 on net) after intermission. Corner kicks were event at 4-4.

Junior forward Riley Buxell (Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area) led SJU with three shots, while the Hermanson twins, Carter and Noah, added two apiece.
