CSC Release

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University juniors Carter Grove (Osakis, Minn.) and Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America cross country/track and field third team on Thursday, June 29.

Nominees must be of a sophomore academic standing or better, with a 3.30 GPA or higher. The Academic All-District and All-America teams are voted upon and selected by registered members of CSC.

Grove, a computer science major, was the NCAA Elite 90 Award recipient, for having the highest cumulative GPA among the competitors at the 2023 Division III outdoor track and field championships, thanks to his perfect 4.0 GPA. He also earned the MIAC Elite 22 Award, which is given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA among the All-MIAC honorees (top three in each event), in both indoor and outdoor track and field this spring. Grove recorded the 11th-fastest time in Division III in the steeplechase and finished 18th out of 22 runners at the national meet. He was All-MIAC four times this academic year – cross country (13th), indoors (third in the 5,000 meters) and twice outdoors (second in the steeplechase and a member of SJU's MIAC-champion 4x800-meter relay) – and received his fourth Academic All-MIAC distinction yesterday (June 28).

A 2022 All-American (40th place) in cross country, Young is an accounting major with a 3.93 GPA. He is a two-time national entrant and All-Region honoree in cross country, and an eight-time All-MIAC performer (twice in cross country and three each indoors and outdoors). In 2022-23, Young finished fourth at the MIAC Cross Country Championship, placed third in the 3,000 meters at the MIAC Indoor Championships and was All-MIAC in two events outdoors: second in the 5,000 meters and third in the 1,500 meters. Yesterday's Academic All-MIAC honor was his sixth (three in cross country and third in track).

The Johnnie cross country team finished second out of 11 teams at the MIAC Championship and seventh out of 28 teams at the NCAA Regional last fall. The track and field team, meanwhile, placed second – two points from first – at the MIAC Indoor Championships in February and won its second-straight outdoor title (14th overall) May 12-13.
