FT. MYERS, Fla. – Saint John's baseball totaled 12 hits, including four doubles, in an 11-6 win over Pittsburgh-Bradford (Pa.) on Wednesday, March 8.
The Johnnies (3-4 overall) plated three runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior third baseman
Joe Becker (New Prague, Minn.) doubled with one out and SJU loaded the bases with back-to-back walks with two outs from junior centerfielder
Jordan Amundson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) junior first baseman
Owen Best (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit). A wild pitch gave SJU its first run of the game before sophomore shortstop
Jackson Peter (Elrosa, Minn./Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa) brought in the other two baserunners with a double down the right-field line.
UPB took advantage of three-straight walks to plate a run in the second inning and tie the game with back-to-back, RBI singles with two outs in the fourth. Senior
Jack Haring (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) entered the game in relief with the bases loaded and ended the threat. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits in 3.1 innings for his first collegiate win.
SJU responded, however, with a trio of two-run hits in the bottom half of the inning to gain a 9-3 lead. Junior outfielders
Jack Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) and
Rodney Erickson (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) reached via single and walk, respectively to start the inning and moved up a base on senior second baseman
Owen Dauk's (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) sacrifice bunt. Becker followed with his second double of the game to make it 5-3. Amundson and Best walked to load the bases before Peter brought in two more with a single. Senior catcher
Zach Selchow (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) walked to re-load the bases and Schleper ended the inning's scoring with a two-run single, his second hit of the frame, to center field.
Amundson (walk), Best (single) and Peter (single) loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning and Selchow lifted SJU to double digits, 10-3, with a sac fly.
The Panthers (3-8 overall) cut their deficit to 10-6 with three runs on four hits, including back-to-back doubles to start the inning, in the seventh. SJU gained a run back with a two-out single from Amundson in the bottom half to end the game's scoring.
Freshman
Evan Soeffker (Buffalo, Minn.) made his collegiate debut and allowed one hit over the final two scoreless innings. Junior
Alex Gwost (Little Falls, Minn.) made his second collegiate start and gave up three runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked five.
Peter led the Johnnies' bats by going 3-for-4 with four RBI. Amundson, Becker and Schleper had two hits apiece. Amundson scored three runs and stole a base, while Becker and Schleper drove in two runs each.
SJU takes on Hiram (Ohio) for a nine-inning game at 3 p.m. ET Thursday, March 9, in Ft. Myers.
