Johnnie Baseball Splits Two More Games in Arizona

Concordia Box Score | Redlands Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. – Saint John's baseball split a pair of scheduled nine-inning games on Sunday, March 19, in Tucson.

The Johnnies (6-8 overall) started the day with a 17-7 loss to Concordia (Wis.) in seven innings, but erupted for six runs in the 10th inning for an extra-inning, 12-7 win over Redlands (Calif.) in the afternoon.

Concordia 17, Saint John's 7 (7 inn.)
SJU had leads of 3-0 and 5-3, but Concordia (8-5 overall) scored a run or more in each of the final six innings for the loss. The Falcons scored eight unearned runs, thanks to five hits with two outs, to erase a 5-4 deficit and break the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Johnnies issued 11 free passes (10 walks and a hit batsmen) in 6.1 innings on the mound.

Senior second baseman Owen Dauk (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) drove in three runs, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Senior designated hitter Max Nyrop (Alameda, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with a double in the first inning and a two-run homer of his own in the sixth. The home run, the 20th of his career, moved him into a tie with Jed Riegelman '04 for second in program history, five behind the record held by former teammate Ethan Roe '22.

Senior lefty Casey Trapp (Blaine, Minn./Centennial) started the game and allowed three runs on three hits in three innings. Freshman Vinny Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) made his second collegiate appearance and took the loss, allowing nine runs – one earned – on six hits in 1.2 innings.

Saint John's 12, Redlands 7 (10 inn.)
All nine Johnnies recorded a hit as SJU totaled 19 in the win, including eight for extra bases (four doubles, two triples and two homers).

SJU found the scoreboard first, almost immediately, when Dauk started the game with a triple and scored on an RBI single from junior third baseman Joe Becker (New Prague, Minn.) in the next at-bat. The Bulldogs (10-10 overall), however, scored three runs in the second inning and another in the third for a 4-1 lead.

Sophomore shortstop Jackson Peter (Elrosa, Minn./Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa) cut the Johnnies' deficit to one with a two-run homer in the fourth inning and SJU took the lead in the fifth thanks to an RBI double from Becker and a sacrifice fly from junior centerfielder Jordan Amundson (Eden Prairie, Minn.).

Dauk extended the lead with a sac fly in the sixth inning, but Redlands tied the game at 6-6 on a two-run shot with two outs in the bottom half of the frame.

SJU left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning and junior left fielder Jack Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) nearly scored the go-ahead run in the ninth but was thrown out at home attempting an inside-the-park home run.

Senior catcher Matt Herold (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) and junior right fielder Rodney Erickson (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) singled with one out in the top of the 10th inning and Dauk was hit by a pitch for the 40th time of his career to load the bases. Becker brought in the first run with a single, followed by a two-run double from Nyrop and a three-run bomb from Amundson.

Freshman Evan Soeffker (Buffalo, Minn.) earned his first collegiate win, allowing one run in two innings of relief. Senior Jack Haring (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) made his team-leading eighth appearance and gave up one hit with two strikeouts in two scoreless innings.

Sophomore Tien Foudray (Excelsior, Minn./Holy Family Catholic) made his first collegiate start and surrendered six runs on nine hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked two.

Nyrop led the Johnnies with five hits (5-for-10), including three doubles and a homer, and four RBI on the day. The four RBI lifted Nyrop into a three-way tie with Riegelman and Ryan Giefer '95 for fifth with 98.

Peter went 4-for-9 and scored four runs, like Dauk (3-for-6), and Amundson registered five RBI.

SJU wraps up its trip to Arizona with a 10 a.m. MT doubleheader vs. Oberlin (Ohio) on Monday, March 20, in Tucson.
