SJU Competes Saturday at Minnesota's Gopher Classic

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's opened its 2023 track and field season by winning all 13 events against Minnesota-Morris last Saturday (Jan. 28) in the Donald McNeely Spectrum. The meet also included a number of SJU alumni.

Two SJU seniors - Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) and Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) – were the top collegiate participants in two events. Arthur won both the 60-meter dash in 7.10 seconds (his prelim time was 7.01) and the 200-meter sprint (23.19). Frost took second in the shot put (14.49 meters), behind Kai Barber's '19 mark of 14.95, and second in the weight throw (15.82 meters). Former teammate Gavin Rupp '22 won the weight throw with a distance of 16.35 meters.

Other Johnnies who won events:

-Junior Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) in the pole vault (4.40 meters);
-Junior Carter Grove (Osakis, Minn.) in the 3,000 meters (8:54.17);
-Senior Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) in the 400-meter dash (52.31);
-Sophomore Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) in the 60-meter hurdles (9.30);
-Senior Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.) in the 800 meters (2:03.43);
-Sophomore Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) in the long jump (6.29 meters);
-Sophomore Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) in the high jump (1.90 meters);
-Senior Elijah Wade (Waco, Texas/Vanguard College Prep) in the triple jump (13.26 meters);
-Junior Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) in the mile run (4:19.45).

WHO WILL BE THERE: The Gophers and Johnnies are scheduled to be joined on the men's side by student-athletes from Augsburg, Buena Vista (Iowa), Division II Concordia-St. Paul, Hamline, Macalester, Minnesota-Morris, Northwestern (Minn.), St. Olaf and Wisconsin-Stout.

IN THE MIAC: With one meet in the books, SJU currently touts 19 top-10 marks/times in the MIAC this season.
