COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Saint John's University dropped one spot in the latest national polls, to No. 19 D3football.com's (Oct. 29) and No. 21 in the American Football Coaches' Association's (Oct. 30).
Five teams in the West region were ranked in D3football.com's top 25: Wisconsin-La Crosse (No. 4), Wisconsin-Whitewater (No. 5), Wisconsin-River Falls (No. 7), Linfield (No. 9) and SJU (No. 19). Whitworth (4), Wisconsin-Oshkosh (3) and Bethel (2) received votes.
The Johnnies (6-2, 5-1 MIAC) out-gained St. Scholastica by a 576-174 margin, including a 241-(-2) advantage in the first quarter, in a 62-7 win on Saturday (Oct. 28) in Collegeville. Senior quarterback
Aaron Syverson (Minnetonka, Minn.) finished 18 of 20 passing for 283 yards and seven touchdowns, all in the first half. The seven passing touchdowns were the most in a half in program history, while the five in a quarter and the total for the game tied the school records set by Jackson Erdmann '19 in 2018 (seven vs. Thomas More, Ky.; five in a quarter vs. Martin Luther).
Senior tight end
Alex Larson (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) was the top target with six catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Two other receivers, senior
Nick VanErp (Battle Lake, Minn./Ottertail Central) and junior
Marselio Mendez (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) also caught two touchdowns each on the afternoon.
SJU travels to face St. Olaf (4-4, 3-3 MIAC) for a 1 p.m. game this Saturday, Nov. 4, in Northfield.
