A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (5-3-3, 2-2-1 MIAC) suffered a 2-0 loss at No. 23 Gustavus Adolphus this past Friday (Oct. 6) in St. Peter. SJU posted a 5-3 advantage in shots, 4-1 on goal, in the first half but the Gusties turned the tide after halftime and gained the win thanks to a pair of goals from Jared Hecht.

Hecht's first tally came in the 68th minute, which ended junior goalkeeper Evan Siefken's (Lakeville, Minn./North) shutout streak at 294:54, and added another for good measure 1:53 later. GAC totaled a 10-4 shot margin (9-1 on net) in the second half.

Siefken finished with seven saves in the loss. Sophomore Sam Steil (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) made one save in the game's final 20:02.

IN NEED OF A GOAL: The Johnnies enter Wednesday's game with a 288:32 scoreless streak, going back to their last goal - freshman midfielder Andrew Pitzner's (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) game-winner - in the 2-1 victory Sept. 23 at Saint Mary's. The tally was Pitzner's third in as many games at the time.

A LOOK AT THE COBBERS: Concordia (4-6-1, 1-4-1 MIAC) saw its winless streak move to four games (0-3-1 record) with a 4-2 home loss to Augsburg on Saturday (Oct. 7). Freshman midfielder Owen Gallo tied the game at 2-2 with 6:27 remaining, but the Auggies tallied a pair of goals 3:08 apart for the victory. The game-winner was a penalty kick in the 85th minute and Michel Munzing completed the hat trick in the 88th. Three Cobbers are tied for the team-lead with five goals apiece this fall: Gallo, sophomore midfielder Gannon Brooks and junior forward Leo Dunor. Dunor leads CC in assists (3) and points (13). Junior goalkeeper Jensen Waltz has all 11 decisions in net with a 2.32 GAA and a .713 save percentage (62 saves).

LAST SEASON: The Johnnies scored three goals in the second half and returned to the win column with a 4-1 victory over Concordia last Sept. 28 (2022) in Collegeville.

Senior Kaidan Popp (Redmond, Wash./Mount Si) gave SJU a quick 1-0 lead with his third goal of the season and fifth of his career late in the seventh minute. Sophomore forward Carter Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) sent a cross into the box for midfielder Drew Engel '22, who chipped a pass to Popp on the right side.

Defender Aidan Becken '23 made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season and fourth of his career 8:50 into the second half. Midfielder Sawyer Schugel '23 sent a corner kick to senior midfielder Matt D. Anderson (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) at the far post, and his header sent the ball along the ground to Becken in the box.

The Cobbers orchestrated a nice cross to cut their deficit to 2-1 less than nine minutes later. Telvin Vah sent a pass through the air – from right to left – to Mason Weigel, who connected on a cross to Yousif Alshihmani for the goal.

Midfielder Sawyer Schugel '23 gave a 2-goal lead back to SJU with his first collegiate tally in the 74th minute. The Cobbers attempted to clear the ball out of the box, but the ball went directly to Schugel, who blasted a shot to the top-left corner.

Sophomore defender Noah Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) ended the game's scoring with a penalty kick, his second goal of the season, with four seconds remaining.

Siefken made one save to improve to 4-1-2 on the year. The Johnnies out-shot the Cobbers by a 21-6 (14-3 on goal) margin, 11-2 in the first half and 10-4 after the break. Each team was whistled for offsides six times.

SERIES HISTORY: SJU is 24-10-3 against the Cobbers since 1987, including a 10-5-1 record in Collegeville. The Johnnies have won each of the last nine meetings on their home pitch, out-scoring CC by a 28-3 margin.
