Johnnies Earn Sweep of Gustavus With 4-0 Shutout

Box Score

ST. PETER, Minn. – Saint John's hockey completed the weekend sweep of Gustavus Adolphus with a 4-0 shutout on Saturday night, Jan. 7, at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

Freshman defenseman Mason Campbell (Rosemount, Minn.) scored the game's first two goals in the second period and sophomore goaltender Bailey Huber (Mahtomedi, Minn.) made 12 saves to record his first collegiate shutout for SJU (8-5-2, 5-2-1 MIAC), which outshot the Gusties (2-11-2, 0-7-1 MIAC) by a 31-12 margin. Huber now touts a 6-2-2 record with a 1.38 GAA and a .944 save percentage this season.

Just like last night's 4-1 home win, SJU found the scoreboard first with a shorthanded goal in the second period – this time from Campbell – unassisted with 6:53 left in the frame. Campbell, who tallied an even-strength goal and an assist Friday night, gave the Johnnies a two-goal lead 4:04 later when he put away a rebound for his fifth goal of the season.

Junior forward Lewis Crosby (Edina, Minn.) extended the margin with his fifth goal of the year and 40th point as a Johnnie 3:58 into the third period and sophomore forward Matt DeRosa (Alpharetta, Ga.) ended the game's scoring with his second goal of the weekend on a nice one-timer from classmate Garrett Smith (Eden Prairie, Minn.) with 5:05 remaining.

SJU has now won nine in a row against GAC (13-2-2 in the last 17 meetings) and leads the series with a 43-13-9 record since 1995.

The Johnnies wrap up their non-conference schedule with a pair of "home" games next weekend, beginning with a 3 p.m. matinee against Wisconsin-Stout on Friday, Jan. 13, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in Sartell. SJU then hosts No. 9 Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a neutral-site game at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Scheels Athletic Complex in Sartell.
