Johnnies Win Four Events in Dual Loss to Gustavus

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's swimming and diving won four events and collected 21 top-three finishes in a 185-114 loss to Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, Jan. 28, in the Warner Palaestra Pool.

Freshman Clay Megaw (Monticello, Minn.) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.97) and took second in the 200-yard version (2:17.94).

Sophomores Langston Philion (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Colby Kern (Delano, Minn.) touched the wall 1 (2:02.32)-2 (2:05.13) in the 200-yard butterfly. Philion also claimed third in the 100-yard butterfly (54.87), while Kern took third in the 100-yard freestyle (48.92).

The Johnnies, led by senior Jack Grabinski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice), swept the top-four scores in both diving events. Grabinski scored a 277.45 on the 1-meter board and a 309.65 in the 3-meter event. Senior Connor Reed (Elk River, Minn./Spectrum), sophomore Eli Grabinski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) and senior Christian Pfau (Williston, N.D.) followed in second (252.35/284.55), third (249.30/281.10) and fourth (223.55/224.55), respectively.

Sophomore Carter Larson (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.03) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.88), while senior Joe Koller (Savage, Minn./Shakopee) took second in both the 100- (55.03) and 200-yard (2:03.98) backstrokes.

Freshman Carsten Reuter (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) was the Johnnies' other second-place finisher in the 50-yard freestyle (21.87).

Senior Ethan Huber (Mitchell, S.D.) placed third behind Koller in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.70) and sophomore Connor Thayer (Prior Lake, Minn.) finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:28.09).

SJU's 200-yard freestyle (1:26.25; Kern, Reuter, Larson, Brinkman) and 200-yard medley (1:37.91; Koller, Megaw, Kern, Larson) finished second.

The Johnnies compete at Division I Minnesota's First Chance Meet on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 3-4, at the Jean Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
