Johnnies Upset No. 10 UW-Stevens Point, 3-2

Box Score

SARTELL, Minn. – Saint John's hockey returned to the win column in a big way with a 3-2 victory over No. 10 Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday night, Jan. 14, at Bernicks Arena in Sartell.

Sophomore goaltender Bailey Huber (Mahtomedi, Minn.) made a career-high 41 saves to improve to 7-2-2 on the year and a pair of Johnnies scored their first goals of the season in the victory, which snapped a nine-game winless streak for SJU (9-6-2, 5-2-1 MIAC) in the series. The Johnnies' last win over the Pointers occurred Nov. 2, 2007, in Stevens Point, Wis. (a 5-3 score).

Senior defenseman Peter Tabor (Edina, Minn.) gave SJU a quick 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season 4:23 into the game, but Mick Heneghan tied it for UWSP (10-3-3, 6-0-0 WIAC) on a power-play tally with 4:59 left in the frame.

Sophomore forward Spencer Rudrud (Eden Prairie, Minn.) gave the lead back to the Johnnies with the lone goal of the second period 8:52 in, his first tally of the season, on a one-timer directly off a faceoff win from classmate Jackson Sabo (Rosemount, Minn.).

Senior forward Jack Johnson (Bemidji, Minn.) padded the lead with what proved to be the game-winning goal - his first goal of the season and 15th of his career - at the 11:51 mark of the third period on a nice cross-ice feed from senior forward Nick Michel (Waconia, Minn.).

Fletcher Anderson cut the Pointers' deficit to one 38 seconds later, but the visitors could not find the equalizer with the goaltender pulled for the game's final two minutes.

SJU went 0-for-5 on the power play, including a pair of 5-on-3 advantages: for 1:40 late in the first period and another for a duration of 1:47 in the second.

The Johnnies return to MIAC action with a home game vs. Hamline at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
