SJU Starts California Trip With 1-1 Draw

Box Score

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Saint John's soccer and Cal Lutheran played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday, Sept. 3, on the campus of UC-Santa Cruz.

The Kingsmen (0-0-1 overall) took a 1-0 lead, thanks to a goal from Igor Lumbrano in the 10th minute, and a 4-2 shot advantage into halftime.

The Johnnies (1-0-1 overall), however, picked up the offensive pace and out-shot CLU 10-4 in the final 45 minutes.

Senior midfielder Matt D. Anderson (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) scored the game-tying goal, his second tally in as many games and the 10th of his collegiate career, 2:45 into the second half. Senior defender Sawyer Schugel (Victoria, Minn./Holy Family Catholic) and freshman forward Carter Hermanson (St. Paul, Minn./Holy Angels) were credited with the assists.

Sophomore Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made three saves in the draw, two of which came in the first half.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel eliminated overtime during the regular season last April. Previously, teams played two 10-minute overtime periods in a sudden-victory (golden goal) format, and if neither team scored, the game ended in a tie. In the MIAC Playoffs and NCAA Tournament, the sudden-victory component was eliminated and teams will play two, 10-minute overtime periods instead.

The Johnnies take on the host Banana Slugs at noon PT Monday, Sept. 5, in Santa Cruz, Calif.
