ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's cross country opened the 2022 season with a dual-meet win over Concordia-Moorhead, 18-45, on Saturday, Sept. 3, at Boulder Ridge G.C. in St. Cloud.
The Johnnies recorded seven of the first eight finishers and 12 of the top 15 overall.
Senior
Dillon Diekmann (Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) won the 6,400-meter/4-mile race with a time of 20:50 and junior
Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy) followed in second (21:28).
Leo Smith led the Cobbers in third place (21:32), but a five-man contingent from SJU followed him in order: junior
Carter Grove (Osakis, Minn.) in fourth (21:40); sophomore
Dylan Bartness (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) in fifth (21:55.0); freshman
Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) in sixth (21:55.0); freshman
Aiden Chalmers (Chaska, Minn./Minnetonka) in seventh (21:55.2); and freshman
Jacob Malecha (Lonsdale, Minn./New Prague) in eighth (21:55.6).
Three Johnnies who competed at the 2021 NCAA Regional – sophomore
Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest), senior
Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.) and junior
Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy), a national entrant last year – did not race in the season opener.
The Johnnies return to action in two weeks - Saturday, Sept. 17 - at the St. Olaf Invitational. The men's race is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Northfield.
