COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University won the MIAC's George Durenberger All-Sports Trophy for the 2021-22 academic year, the conference announced on Friday, May 20.

SJU won the MIAC regular-season title in five sports - golf, football, indoor track and field, basketball and outdoor track and field - in addition to two second- (baseball and swimming & diving) and two third-place (cross country and hockey) finishes in the conference standings.

The Johnnies compiled a total of 96 points, followed by Gustavus Adolphus (80), St. Olaf (72) and Carleton (70). The MIAC's all-sports competitions were not held in 2019-20 or 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The title is SJU's 15th since 1968-69 and first since 2006-07.

Saint John's or St. Thomas has won the George Durenberger Trophy every year except one (Gustavus in 2003-04) since 1979-80.

SJU's 16-point cushion was the largest between first and second place since the 2016-17 academic year, when the Tommies won eight of the 11 regular-season titles for a 25-point margin. The Johnnies finished second behind UST by seven points in 2018-19 and by 2.5 in 2017-18.

The men's and women's MIAC All-Sports trophies had its beginnings in the 1963-64 school year, when Bob Schabert, who covered the MIAC for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, began determining men's all-sports results. The current men's trophy, named in honor of long-time athletic director George Durenberger '28, was donated by the Saint John's University J-Club prior to the 1972-73 academic year.

Since the 2003-04 season, first-place points are determined by the number of teams participating in that sport. Second place, third place, etc., receive points in a descending order, based on the first-place point total. From 1972-2003, 11 points were awarded for first place, 10 for second, nine for third, etc.
