TWO TOURNEYS: The two-day SJU Spring Invitational was split into two events due to the poor weather this spring and the need for competitions.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's opened its spring season with a one-shot loss to No. 20 Gustavus Adolphus, 297-296, yesterday (April 21) at Minnesota Valley C.C. (par 73) in Bloomington.

Sophomore Glavine Schugel (New Ulm, Minn.), junior Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) and sophomore Blake Schuler (Waconia, Minn.) all birdied the par-5, 600-yard No. 18 to cut GAC's lead to one.

Schugel led the Johnnies with a 1-under par 72, including five birdies on the back nine, to finish third. The round was his ninth at par or below this season.

Gutzmer finished sixth (+1, 74) and Schuler was one shot behind him in a tie for seventh (+2, 75). Schuler eagled the par-5, 556-yard No. 15.

Sophomore Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) claimed ninth with a 76 (+3), despite an eight on the par-3 No. 7, and classmate Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) double-bogeyed No. 18 for a 78 (+5).
