FT. MYERS, Fla. – Saint John's baseball wrapped up the Ft. Myers portion of its spring-break trip with a doubleheader split against Hiram (Ohio) on Tuesday, March 8.
The Johnnies (4-5 overall) cruised to a 7-1 win in game one, but spotted the Terriers (1-2 overall) five runs in the first inning of game two in an eventual 8-7 defeat, SJU's third one-run loss of the season. SJU batted 3-for-18 (.167) with two outs on the day and left 11 men on base (nine through the first four innings) in the second game.
Game 1
SJU built a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings. Junior
Zach Selchow (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) doubled with one out in the third and scored on a single from sophomore third baseman
Joe Becker (New Prague, Minn.). Junior shortstop
Matthew Hayford (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) made it 2-0 with an RBI groundout.
Senior outfielder
Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) started the fourth inning with a double and scored on a triple off the bat of sophomore outfielder
Jordan Amundson (Eden Prairie, Minn.), his second in as many games. Amundson then scored on an RBI single from Selchow.
Becker padded the Johnnies' lead with a three-run home run, his second of the season, in the top of the sixth inning.
The Terriers erased the shutout with a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman lefty
Will Fazio (Minneapolis, Minn./Blake) earned his first collegiate win, in his first SJU start, allowing the one run on eight hits in 5.2 innings.
Junior
Jack Haring (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) pitched the final 1.1 hitless innings in relief.
Becker, the reigning MIAC Player of the Week, finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and Selchow went 2-for-3.
Game 2
Down 5-0, SJU left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning but managed two plate two in the second thanks to a Hiram error and an RBI squeeze bunt from Hayford.
The Johnnies recorded three straight singles to start the bottom of the third and cut the deficit to 5-4 – on an RBI single from senior
Ethan Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) and a sacrifice fly from Selchow – but left the bases loaded with one out.
The Terriers extended their lead to 7-4 on a two-out, two-run double in the top of the fourth and added another two-out run in the sixth.
Ethan Roe cut it to 8-7 with a two-out, three-run double in the bottom half of the inning but the Johnnies stranded a one-out single from Becker in the bottom of the seventh. Ethan finished 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Soren extended his hit streak to nine games by going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Junior
Sam Hanson (Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on two hits in 0.1 of an inning.
Hiram plated two runs off Haring, who pitched 3.2 more innings of relief. He struck out four and surrendered three hits. Freshman
Kade Bowar (Burnsville, Minn.) made his collegiate debut and gave up one run on three hits in three innings on the hill.
The Johnnies follow a much-needed off-day Wednesday by playing nine-inning games against No. 2 Marietta (Ohio) and Heidelberg (Ohio) on Thursday, March 11, in Port Charlotte, Fla.
