Scoring Frenzy Fuels SJU to 8-3 Non-Conference Win

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Seven different Johnnies scored a goal in Saint John's 8-3 non-conference win over Hamline on Monday, Feb. 7, at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud.

SJU (13-6-2, 6-3-1 MIAC) out-shot the Pipers by a slim 37-35 margin and went 3-for-5 on the power play.

Two juniors from Edina, captain Auggie Moore (2g/2a) and defenseman Peter Tabor (0g/4a), recorded four-point games.

SJU jumped out to a 3-0 lead on nine shots in the first period. Freshman forward Spencer Rudrud (Eden Prairie, Minn.) started the scoring with his fifth goal of the year 3:23 into the game. Sophomore forward Lewis Crosby (Edina, Minn.) tallied his team-leading 15th goal with 6:10 left in the opening frame and junior forward Joe Papa (St. Charles, Ill.) registered his second collegiate goal at the 18:20 mark.

HU (3-15-1, 1-9-0 MIAC) erased the shutout 3:05 into the second period before the Johnnies scored five straight goals, including a four in the second. Moore made it 4-1 with a power-play tally at the 8:32 mark and freshman forward Cody Carlson (Buffalo, Minn.) added to the lead 2:26 later. Goals from Borst and Moore, again, gave the home team a 7-1 lead entering the third period.

Sophomore defenseman Max Osborne (Anchorage, Alaska) scored the Johnnies' third power-play goal of the evening 4:26 into the final frame.

The Pipers ended the games scoring with a pair of goals in the final four minutes, including a 5-on-3 power play tally with 55 seconds remaining.

Senior goaltender Michael Magnuson (Sunfish Lake, Minn.) made his fifth start of the season and stopped 32 shots in the win (3-2 record).

The Johnnies return to conference play this weekend against St. Olaf (8-12-3, 5-6-1 MIAC), beginning with a 7 p.m. puck-drop on Friday, Feb. 11, in Northfield. The two teams conclude the series with a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
