SJU Drops Regular-Season Finale, Earns Sixth Seed in MIAC Playoffs

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's soccer ended its regular-season schedule with a 2-0 loss at Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Bell Field.

Despite the loss, SJU (7-6-3, 4-5-1 MIAC) earned its 12th trip to the MIAC Playoffs and ninth in the last 10 seasons thanks to wins by Bethel (vs. Augsburg) and St. Scholastica (vs. Saint Mary's) Saturday afternoon. The Johnnies ended the conference schedule in a three-way tie Augsburg and St. Scholastica for sixth place in the MIAC standings and won the tie-breaker due to their 1-0-1 record against the Auggies and Saints.

The sixth-seeded Johnnies travel to face third-seeded Macalester (8-5-3, 7-2-1 MIAC) in the MIAC quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, in St. Paul.

Ben Pennell gave Carleton (8-6-3, 6-3-1 MIAC) a 1-0 lead with a rebound goal in the 24th minute and found Briggs Priem for the game's final goal 8:09 into the second half.

SJU recorded the contest's first eight shots and totaled a 13-6 (4-1 on goal) shot advantage in the first half. The Knights, however, retaliated with a 10-3 margin in the final 45 minutes to even the stat at 16-16 (6-4 in favor of SJU on goal). Corner kicks were even at four apiece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made two saves in the loss.
