COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Saint John's track and field opened the 2022 indoor season with a triangular win on Saturday, Jan. 29, in the Donald McNeely Spectrum.

SJU won 11 events and recorded 32 top-three marks/times for a total of 147 points, followed by Macalester (63) and Minnesota-Morris (31). The Johnnies were uncontested in the high jump and did not compete in the 4x400-meter relay.

Junior Eli Mollet (Jefferson, S.D./Bishop Heelan Catholic, Iowa) broke the SJU record in the weight throw with a toss of 17.71 meters, his second of six attempts, to win the event. The previous record was 17.43 meters, set by Tim Juba '11 in 2011. Juniors Gavin Rupp (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) and Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) followed Mollet in second (16.67 meters) and third (14.94 meters), respectively. Frost led SJU with a second-place mark (14.14 meters) in the shot put.

Junior Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) won a pair of events, the 60-meter hurdles (8.96) and high jump (1.88 meters). Petersen tied with freshman Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) for the top height in the high jump, but Petersen cleared the mark on his first attempt (to Ungar's third). Ungar also claimed second (6.23 meters) to classmate Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) in the long jump (6.31 meters).

Junior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) started his season with a career-best time of 6.97 seconds, which was 0.06 from senior Ryan Miller's (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) program record set in 2020, to win the 60-meter dash. Arthur also finished second in the 200-meter sprint (23.20).

Senior Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) led three Johnnies in the 400-meter dash (50.98), while junior Tom Nemanich (Red Wing, Minn.) and senior Dillon Diekmann (Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) recorded first-place finishes in the 800 meters (2:04.47) and mile run (4:31.77), respectively.

A five-time All-Region honoree in the triple jump, Michael Wallace (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) started his senior season with a win and a distance of 13.56 meters in the event.

SJU registered the top three times in the 3,000 meters, led by junior Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.) in 8:41.21, as well as the top three in the pole vault with sophomore Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) leading the way in 4.39 meters.

The Johnnies travel to compete at Macalester's invitational at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, in St. Paul.
