COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer won its home opener with a 2-0 shutout of Wisconsin-Platteville on Saturday, Sept. 4, at Haws Field.
Senior midfielder
Drew Engel (De Pere, Wis.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, his first collegiate tally, for SJU (1-1 overall) 6:31 into the contest. Sophomore midfielder
Brian Real Juarez (Shakopee, Minn.) sent a cross into the box where the ball was deflected into the air, bounced, and Engel sent it to the back of the net with a header.
Junior forward
Ryan Erickson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) added an insurance goal - on a nice left-to-right cross from sophomore midfielder Kaiden Popp (Redmond, Wash./Mount Si) - early in the 74th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper
Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made five saves to record his first collegiate shutout.
SJU held a narrow edge in shots, 8-7, though the Pioneers (0-2 overall) posted statistical advantages in shots on goal (5-4) and corner kicks (6-3).
The Johnnies continue the homestand with a 3 p.m. game on Labor Day – Monday, Sept. 6 – against Puget Sound (Wash.) at Haws Field.
