A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (2-2-0 overall) and Division II St. Cloud State played an evenly matched game, the first in the crosstown rivals' history, but the Huskies pulled out a 2-1 win on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Haws Field.
Junior forward
Ryan Erickson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) gave SJU (2-2-0 overall) an early 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season in the 13th minute. Junior midfielder
Sawyer Schugel (Victoria, Minn./Holy Family Catholic) flicked a contested ball past the SCSU goalkeeper and Erickson finished to a wide-open net.
SCSU, however, tied the game 53 seconds later on a goal from Emmanuel Iwe. A set piece in the 35th minute proved to be the difference, as a Ouceny Soumah-to-Jakob Mohrlok corner kick proved as the game-winning goal.
SJU held statistical advantages in shots (14-12), shots on goal (9-8) and corner kicks (6-5). Freshman
Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made six saves in the loss.
A LOOK AT THE WARHAWKS: Wisconsin-Whitewater improved to 3-0 overall with a 2-0 shutout Wednesday (Sept. 8) at Millikin (Ill.). The Warhawks tallied goals in the 71st and 83rd minutes. Six of the team's nine goals so far this fall occurred in the second half, including each of the last three after the 70th minute.
Freshman 6-foot-4 forward Jacob Mouille leads the team with three goals, while six other Warhawks have a goal apiece. UWW has out-shot the opposition 66-22 (23-9 on goal) and have allowed one goal in the season's first 270 minutes. Saturday's match will be UWW's home opener after the Sept. 5 tilt vs. Monmouth (Ill.) was postponed and rescheduled for Sept. 21.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 4-2 all-time against Whitewater and 15-11-4 against UW schools since 1980: Wisconsin-Oshkosh (1-3-1), Division II Wisconsin-Parkside (1-2-1), Wisconsin-Platteville (4-0-1) and Wisconsin-Superior (5-4-1).
THE LAST TIME: Wisconsin-Whitewater remained unbeaten (10-0-1 record) thanks to a late goal and a 1-0 win over Saint John's back on Sept. 22, 2019, in Collegeville.
The Warhawks' Henry Raymonds put away a loose ball in the box in the 82nd minute for the game's lone goal. SJU cleared out a deep throw-in, but UWW serviced the ball back into the box, where it pinballed before finding Raymonds' foot.
Goalkeeper Nicholas French '20 made five saves in the loss. SJU out-shot Whitewater by a 13-9 margin (7-6 on goal in favor of UWW). Fouls (10-10) and corner kicks (4-4) were both even.
