NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's sophomore
Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) won the MIAC decathlon on Friday, May 7, at Carleton's Laird Stadium in Northfield.
Petersen became the first Johnnie to win the conference title in the event since All-American Brayden Wagner '09 in 2009 with a total of 6,357 points, which is 12th-best in NCAA Division III this spring and 235 points ahead of St. Olaf's Stephen Peper in second place.
Petersen started the day with a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (15.87) and followed with a second-place mark in the discus (34.39 meters). His time in the 110-meter hurdles was 1.29 seconds faster than his time at the SJU Decathlon in mid-April.
He took first in the javelin (55.70 meters) and sixth in the pole vault (3.56 meters).
Freshman
Logan Hennen (Prior Lake, Minn.) finished 14th (5,255 points), while sophomore
Mason DeGross (New Prague, Minn.) claimed fourth in the pole vault (3.86 meters) but did not score in the javelin or 1,500 meters.
The trio and the rest of the Johnnie track and field team competes at the 2021 MIAC Outdoor Championships next Friday-Saturday, May 14-15, at Hamline's Klas Field in St. Paul.
