Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's baseball extended its win streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of Carleton, 5-3 and 12-2, on Saturday, April 24, at Becker Park.

Down 3-1 in the sixth inning of game one, the Johnnies (19-8, 9-7 MIAC) scored four runs, including a three-run homer from junior outfielder Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake), to win the opener. SJU scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to invoke the 10-run rule in game two.

The Johnnies batted .377 (23-for-61) on the day, while three pitchers – junior Nathan Brandecker (South St. Paul, Minn.), freshman Kody Dalen (Carver, Minn./Chanhassen) and sophomore Matt Herold (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) – totaled 15 strikeouts in 15 innings. Carleton (2-12, 0-12 MIAC) batted .156 (5-for-32) with runners on base and .158 (3-for-19) with runners in scoring position on the afternoon.

Game 1
SJU found the scoreboard first with an unearned run – thanks to a sacrifice fly from sophomore designated hitter Max Nyrop (Alameda, Calif.) – in the first inning, but the Knights chipped away with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings off Brandecker. Nyrop hit two doubles and drove in three, bringing his RBI total to 30 this season.

Sophomore first baseman Zach Selchow (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) started the sixth-inning rally by reaching via error. He came around to score, cutting SJU's deficit to 3-2, on a one-out double from freshman outfielder Jack Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.). Sophomore second baseman Owen Dauk (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) walked before Roe gave SJU the lead by driving a 1-1 pitch just over the left-center field fence for his third homer of the season.

Brandecker went the distance, allowing the three runs (two earned) on five hits to even his record at 2-2 on the year. He struck out six in seven innings.

Game 2
Each starter had a hit as the Johnnies totaled 16 in game two. SJU jumped on Carleton's Ben Jeweler, the reigning MIAC Pitcher of the Week, for six runs on seven hits through the first 2.2 innings.

Freshman outfielder Rodney Erickson (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) finished 4-for-7 with three doubles and two runs scored on the day, including a 3-for-5 performance with the four RBI in game two.

Junior catcher Ethan Roe (Golden Valley, Minn.) also added three hits in game two, while sophomore shortstop Matt Hayford (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) drove in three.

Dalen improved to 5-0 with the win. He struck out seven and allowed eight singles. The eighth was a two-out, two-run base hit that ended his day in the seventh inning.

Herold struck out two and allowed one hit in 1.1 innings of relief.

The Johnnies and Knights are scheduled to complete the three-game series with a nine-inning game at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 25, in Northfield.
