A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (2-1 overall) suffered its first loss of the 2021 spring season with a 2-1 defeat to Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday (April 17) in Collegeville.
Scott Heinen's free kick from the left of the net went past everyone in front and served as the game-winner for GAC.
The Gusties found the scoreboard first, 10:30 into the match, on a goal from Nolan Garvin. GAC's corner kick pinballed around the box and senior defender
Joe Parise (Milwaukie, Ore./La Salle Prep) headed the ball out, but the clearing attempt went right to Garvin, who ripped a shot to the right edge of the goal.
Senior midfielder
Paul Wadsworth (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) tied the game for SJU with his 12th career goal in the 32nd minute. Sophomore defender
Cavin Allen (Excelsior, Minn./Chanhassen) serviced a deep free kick to the middle of the box, where Wadsworth headed the ball backwards into the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jake Swanson (Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) made 10 saves as Gustavus out-shot SJU 18-3. The visitors turned on the offensive pressure in the second half, out-shooting the Johnnies 11-1 with an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks (16-1 in the game).
A LOOK AT THE CARDINALS: Saint Mary's (1-2-0, 0-0 MIAC) dropped a 3-1 home decision to Concordia last Sunday (April 18) in Winona. Concordia opened the scoring with a rebound off a penalty kick in the 13th minute and made it 2-0 in the 39th minute. Junior Eli Szymanski cut the Cardinals' deficit with a penalty kick in the 79th minute - SMU's second goal in 270 minutes this season - but the Cobbers added an insurance goal five minutes later. Szymanski is SMU's returning statistical leader, from 2019, in goals (10), points (23) and game-winning goals (3).

Ryan Erickson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) serviced the ball to the back post and Stone sent a header back across the box to a wide-open Foster.
The Cardinals cut their deficit to 4-3 with a pair of goals 30 seconds apart in the 58th minute, the first of which was a penalty kick.
Senior midfielder
Tommy Picka (Victoria, Minn./Chaska) gave SJU some breathing room with his first goal as a Johnnie with 5:31 remaining. He curved a free kick from the corner of the box, around the wall, untouched to the back of the net.
