Johnnies Finish Sweep of Augsburg With 11-5 Win

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's baseball completed the three-game sweep of Augsburg with an 11-5 win on Sunday, April 18, at Becker Park.

The Johnnies (15-8, 5-7 MIAC) totaled 14 hits, including two home runs and five doubles (two ground-rule) in the win.

Augsburg (4-17, 2-11 MIAC) plated an unearned run in the top of the first inning, but SJU recorded six consecutive hits with two outs to score five runs in the bottom of the third. Junior catcher Ethan Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) brought in the fourth and fifth runs with a two-run homer, his ninth of the season. The nine dingers are tied for the third-most in an SJU season.

The Auggies cut the deficit to 5-3 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning and freshman third baseman Joe Becker (New Prague, Minn.) made it 6-3 with an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning. He finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the game (5-for-9 with six RBI, five runs scored and three doubles in the series).

Sophomore designated hitter Max Nyrop (Alameda, Calif.) broke the game open with a grand slam, his fourth home run of the season, to up the Johnnies' lead to 10-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

The visitors tallied two unearned runs in the seventh inning and junior outfielder Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) ended the game's scoring with an RBI single in the bottom half of the frame.

Sophomore Alex Otto (Monticello, Minn.) made his first start of the season (second of his collegiate career) and allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits to improve to 4-0 on the year. He struck out six in 6.2 innings.

Sophomore Cade Marsolek (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) made his first pitching appearance since March 10, due to injury, and allowed four hits with two strikeouts in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Freshman outfielder Jack Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) recorded the first 4-hit game of his collegiate career (4-for-4), while Becker, Nyrop and Soren Roe had two hits apiece.

Every Johnnie starter recorded a hit except for sophomore shortstop Matt Hayford (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes), who entered Sunday's game's 6-for-10 from the plate in the previous three contests. Hayford was still productive, however, going 0-for-1 with two sacrifice bunts and a walk.

SJU is now 50-16 against Augsburg since the 1988 season, including wins in each of the last 10 meetings in Collegeville.

The Johnnies travel to face Bethel (15-7, 9-3 MIAC) for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 21, in Arden Hills.
