SJU Posts 13 Top-Three Finishes in Season Opener

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Saint John's swimming and diving opened its 2020-21 season with a dual loss to St. Thomas on Saturday, Feb. 6, in Collegeville.

The Johnnies won two swimming events and turned in 13 top-three performances in the 183-108 decision (team score does not include the diving results).

Sophomore Joe Koller (Savage, Minn./Shakopee) won the 100-yard backstroke in 55.09 seconds and was followed by junior Spencer Atkinson (Cold Spring, Minn./Litchfield) in second (56.49).

Sophomore Beau Brinkman (Wayzata, Minn.) and junior Steven Froehle (DuPont, Wash./Steilacoom) touched the wall second (22.54) and third (22.85), respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle. Froehle also placed third in the 100-yard freestyle (50.18).

Freshman Alex Heer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) made his SJU debut and claimed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.64) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (56.17).

Senior Eli Greenblat (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.63) and was matched by three sophomores with third-place times: Ethan Huber (Mitchell, S.D.) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.84), Ethan Lemke (Moorhead, Minn.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:58.27) and Jack Mehus (Fargo, N.D./South) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.16).

The Johnnies were uncontested in the diving events, where sophomore Jack Grabinski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) won both the 1- (446.75) and 3-meter (426.45) dives.

SJU won the 200-yard freestyle relay (Huber, Froehle, Brinkman, Atkinson) in 1:30.05, while the 200-yard medley relay (Heer, Greenblat, Mehus, Brinkman) claimed third (1:41.90).

The Johnnies host Hamline for a two-day dual in Collegeville, beginning with swimming competition at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at the Warner Palaestra Pool. Diving competition is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13.
