Brown's Hat Trick Carries SJU to 4-2 Win at Bethel

Box Score

BLAINE, Minn. - Senior defenseman Travis Brown (Otsego, Minn.) scored a hat trick for Saint John's in a 4-2 non-conference win at Bethel on Friday, Feb. 5, at the Super Rink in Blaine.

The hat trick was the first by an SJU defenseman since Tryg Sarsland '98 scored three in the Johnnies' 13-2 win on Jan. 30, 1998, at Hamline. All four of SJU's goals came from defensemen, as freshman Jack Olsen (Lakeville, Minn.) made the scoresheet with a shorthanded goal in the second period.

Brown started the scoring for SJU (2-1 overall) 3:59 into the game and buried his own rebound, during a 4-on-4, 1:24 into the second period. He completed the hat trick with a power-play tally - during a BU five-minute major - with 9:48 remaining. Brown entered Friday's matchup with five points (1g/4a) in eight career games against BU.

Dylan Giorgio cut Bethel's (1-2 overall) deficit in half, 2-1, near the halfway mark (9:36) of the second period. Carter Wagner gained possession of the puck near the corner from Berglove and found Giorgio in front of the net before the Johnnies' netminder became set in the crease.

Olsen gave the Johnnies another two-goal lead with a shorthanded, breakaway goal - his first collegiate point - with 3:30 left in the second.

BU's Ben Ward ended the game's scoring with 1:07 left.

Senior goaltender Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) made 25 saves to even his season record at 1-1.

SJU out-shot the Royals 41-27 and went 1-for-5 on the power play, while denying all six of BU's opportunities on the man advantage.

The win extended the Johnnies' unbeaten streak in the series to 14 games (13-0-1 record).

The Johnnies play host to the Royals for the MIAC opener at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud. SJU has won each of the last 10 meetings at the HBNHC.
