SJU Welcomes Concordia to Collegeville Sunday

Saint John's track and field hosts Concordia for an 11 a.m. dual meet on Sunday, Feb. 28, in the Donald McNeely Spectrum. – Live Results | Live Video

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's won nine events in a triangular victory at Bethel last Saturday (Feb. 20) in Arden Hills. The Johnnies totaled 22 top-three finishes to post 81.5 points, followed by the host Royals (68.5) and Augsburg (11).

SJU recorded the top three times in the 400-meter dash, as well as the three best heights in both the high jump and pole vault.

Senior Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) led the field in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.68 seconds. Junior Jacob Reding (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) and freshman Carson Davis (New Prague, Minn.) followed in second (53.08) and third (53.81), respectively.

Sophomore Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) won the high jump with a season-best mark of 1.95 meters, while junior Sam Rademacher (Marshall, Minn.) placed second (1.83 meters) and sophomore Jared Meier (Jordan, Minn./Shakopee) tied for third (1.73 meters).

Senior Drew Dockendorf (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Holdingford) earned first-place honors in the pole vault with a season-best height of 4.55 meters. Freshman Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) and sophomore Joe Stauffer (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) tied for second (4.10 meters).

Senior Ryan Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.11 seconds and sophomore Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) followed in third (7.21). Junior Jack Young (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori), who was 0.01 behind Arthur in fourth (7.22), also finished third in the 200-meter dash (23.53).

Sophomore Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.) took first in the 3,000 meters with a personal-best time of 9:00.98 and junior Eli Mollet (Jefferson, S.D./Bishop Heelan Catholic) won the weight throw with a toss of 16.32 meters.

Junior Michael Wallace (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) and sophomore Alex Crnkovich (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) were uncontested in the triple jump. Wallace recorded a mark of 13.14 meters on his first jump and Crnkovich posted a distance of 11.95 meters on his final leap.

Sophomore Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.) won the two-man, 1,000-meter race with a personal-best time of 2:34.54 and the Johnnies' 4x200-meter relay (Mack Maroushek, Labine, Davis, Reding) placed first with a time of 1:35.53.

Sophomore Gavin Rupp (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) finished second in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 13.38 meters and classmate Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.) was third (12.76 meters).

Freshman Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy) made his SJU debut and claimed second in the 800 meters (2:01.10). Senior Ryan Thompson (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) took third in the long jump (5.79 meters).

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Miller was named the MIAC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week on Monday (Feb. 22). The honor, which recognized performances from Feb. 8-21, was the first for a Johnnie indoor track student-athlete since Thomas Feichtinger '16 in 2016. Petersen and Collin Trout '20 received the field distinction in 2020.

Miller won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.94 seconds in Feb. 13's triangular win in Collegeville. The time is currently tied for the 11th-fastest in NCAA Division III.

A two-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Central Region honoree in both indoor and outdoor track, Miller tied for 16th nationally in the 60-meter dash with a school-record time of 6.90 seconds in 2020.

IN THE MIAC: The Johnnies (as of Feb. 25) currently boast 34 top-10 marks/times in the MIAC this indoor season, including 10 in the top three.

A LOOK AT THE COBBERS: Concordia made an unexpected road trip to Grand Forks, N.D., last Saturday to compete at Division North Dakota's Tune-Up. The Cobbers were initially set to host a home meet, but the dual with Division II MSU-Moorhead was canceled during the week and CC took the opportunity to head north to compete against Division I opponents. CC finished third in the four-team meet, which included MSU-Moorhead, UND and Division I North Dakota State.

Senior Munir Isahak won the mile with a time of 4:24.02, which was four seconds faster than the runner-up and a season-best by over 4.0 seconds. The time is also the sixth-fastest in the MIAC.

Junior Jesse Middendorf finished second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.09, which is the fastest in the MIAC and 16th in Division III. He also holds the fastest time in the 600 meters (1:23.07).

Junior Cal Wright put up a season-best time of 49.98 seconds in the 400-meter sprint, which is good for second-fastest time in the MIAC. He is also sixth 200-meter dash (23.19).

Senior Jacob Steiner currently ranks third in the conference in the shot put (15.37 meters) and fourth in the weight throw (15.59 meters). The shot-put mark is currently 13th nationally.
