Large First-Half Run Carries SJU to 81-65 Road Win

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Saint John's basketball ended its non-conference schedule with an 81-65 win at Buena Vista on Wednesday, Nov. 24, in Storm Lake, Iowa.

The matinee start (2 p.m.) looked bleak for the Johnnies (4-2, 1-0 MIAC), who missed their first four shots and fell behind early, 8-0. SJU, however, responded with a 24-3 run and shot 70.8 percent (17-for-24) the rest of the first half to take a 43-28 lead into the break.

The Johnnies finished at 58 percent (29-for-50) for the game and went 6-for-11 from three-point range in the second half. 

Sophomore wing Ryan Thissen (Rosemount, Minn./Eastview) led all scorers with a season-high 22 points. He also recorded team highs in assists (6) and rebounds (6).

Senior guard Colton Codute (Wayzata, Minn./Orono) followed with 14 points, including 12 on 4-for-4 shooting from long range in the game's final eight minutes.

Senior post Zach Hanson (New Prague, Minn.) was the third Johnnie in double figures with 13 points, on 5-for-7 shooting, in 20 minutes of play.

Michael Demers led BVU (2-3, 0-0 ARC), which shot 41.4 percent (24-for-58) overall and 22.2 percent (6-for-27) from behind the arc, with 18 points.

The Johnnies travel to face Saint Mary's (1-2, 1-1 MIAC) for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday, Dec. 1, in Winona.
