SJU Earns Series Split With Convincing 5-1 Win

Box Score

BLAINE, Minn. - Saint John's hockey evened its season record and earned a series split against Bethel with a 5-1 win on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at the Super Rink in Blaine.

The Johnnies (4-4-1, 2-2-0 MIAC) suffered a 1-0 loss to the Royals as the final horn sounded in overtime back on Nov. 10 in St. Cloud.

SJU produced the victory Tuesday night thanks to goals from its team captain and four underclassmen, as well as 29 saves from senior goaltender Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.).

Freshman forward Cody Carlson (Buffalo, Minn.) gave SJU a quick 1-0 lead with his first collegiate goal 2:26 into the game and sophomore forward Nick Michel (Waconia, Minn.) made it 2-0 with his fourth goal 6:07 into the second period.

Bethel (6-2-1, 2-1-1 MIAC) cut its deficit in half with a goal with 26 seconds left in the second period, 19 seconds after SJU killed off a Royal power play. The Royals received a vote in the latest USCHO.com Top 15 poll released yesterday (Nov. 22).

The Johnnies answered with three goals in the third period to seal the win. Sophomore defenseman Max Osborne (Anchorage, Alaska) made it a two-goal game with his second goal of the season 2:10 into the third period.

Sophomore forward Max Borst (Edina, Minn.) tallied his second goal of the season with 9:34 remaining and junior captain Auggie Moore (Edina, Minn.) ended the scoring with an empty-netter - his second straight game with a goal - with 1:54 remaining.

The Johnnies out-shot the Royals, 39-30. Both teams were 0-for-3 on the man advantage.

SJU is now 22-9-1 against BU under the direction of head coach Doug Schueller, including a 9-4-1 record in Blaine. The Johnnies are unbeaten over the last seven meetings (6-0-1 record) at the Super Rink.

The Johnnies return from Thanksgiving break with a 7 p.m. home game against Gustavus Adolphus (2-5-1, 0-1-1 MIAC) on Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
