Young Finishes Fifth, Johnnies Ninth at NCAA Regional

COLFAX, Wis. – Saint John's cross country finished ninth out of 31 teams at the NCAA North Regional on Saturday, Nov. 13, at Whitetail G.C. in Colfax, Wis.

Sophomore Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) led SJU with a fifth-place finish (24:43) out of 219 runners to punch his ticket to the 2021 NCAA Division III Championships at 11 a.m. ET next Saturday, Nov. 20, at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.

No. 10 Wisconsin-Whitewater (58 points) won the regional by one point over No. 8 Wisconsin-La Crosse (59) thanks to the Warhawks claiming the top two finishers. No. 24 St. Olaf led the MIAC in fifth place (167 points), followed by Wisconsin-Stout (197), No. 15 Carleton (198), Gustavus Adolphus (219) and SJU (220).

Senior Andy Goldsmith (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) joined Young with All-Region honors (top 35) in 26th place with a time of 25:04.

Sophomores Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy) and Carter Grove (Osakis, Minn.) followed in 60th (25:55) and 61st (25:56), respectively, and freshman Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) was the Johnnies' fifth score in 68th (25:59).

The field for the 2021 NCAA Division III Championships - - is expected to be announced no later than 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, on www.ncaa.com. Each of the 10 regional champions earn an automatic bid to nationals and 22 teams will receive an at-large berth. In addition, 70 individuals, not on qualifying teams, earn automatic selection based on their finish at the regional.
