Johnnies Post Key Shutout of Augsburg, 3-0

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer handed regionally ranked Augsburg its first loss of the season with a 3-0 shutout on Saturday, Oct. 2, at Haws Field.

Senior midfielder Tommy Picka (Victoria, Minn./Chaska) snapped the Auggies' six-game shutout streak – a span of 564:10 - 9:45 into the contest. The transfer from Augsburg (following the 2017 season) ripped a rocket from just outside the 18-yard box for his first goal of the season and third of his SJU career. Junior defender Cavin Allen (Excelsior, Minn./Chanhassen) and senior forward Guy Mohs (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) were credited with the assists.

An SJU free kick from 30 yards out pin-balled in the box before sophomore midfielder Jack Simonet (Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) found freshman midfielder Christian Rodriguez (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) alone near the right post for his first collegiate goal with 4:38 left in the first half for SJU (5-4-1, 2-2-0 MIAC).

Junior defender Aidan Becken (Prior Lake, Minn.) ended the game's scoring with a textbook header off a corner kick from Picka in the 59th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made three saves for his third shutout of the season (4-4-1 record).

SJU out-shot the Auggies, 17-14 (9-3 on net). Augsburg (9-1-0, 4-1-0 MIAC) entered the game ranked No. 4 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Region IX poll released prior to Sept. 28's game and had allowed a total of three goals through the season's first nine games.

The win snapped a two-game losing skid for SJU in the series, which the Johnnies lead with a 34-7-4 record since 1978 (including an 18-2-2 record in Collegeville).

The Johnnies host St. Olaf for Homecoming at 4 p.m. next Saturday, Oct. 9, in Collegeville.
