FT. MYERS, Fla. - No. 25 Saint John's baseball opened its 2020 season with a doubleheader sweep of Bluffton (Ohio), 9-4 and 11-3, on Monday, March 2.
The Johnnies out-hit the Beavers (0-4 overall) 20-8 and the pitching staff combined for 24 strikeouts in 16 innings.
Bluffton scored four runs (two earned), all with two outs, in the doubleheader's first 1.5 innings. SJU, however, answered with three run in the bottom of the second and plated five on three hits in the fourth.
Senior
Stanley Ridgeway (Litchfield, Minn.) picked up the win in game one after pitching three hitless innings of relief. He struck out five and walked one.
Senior
Mason Miller (Big Lake, Minn.) allowed the four runs, on six hits, though he struck out four. Junior
Nick Penick (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
In game two, it was SJU's turn to run up the scoreboard early on as the Johnnies jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 1.5 innings.
Five Johnnies combined for the two-hitter in game two's scheduled nine innings, four of which were freshmen. The starter,
Cade Marsolek (Savage, Minn./Burnsville), allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out four in three innings, while
Braden Higgins (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) picked up the win. He struck out six and did not allow a baserunner.
Alex Otto (Silver Creek, Minn./Monticello) and
Casey Trapp (Blaine, Minn./Centennial) struck out two and pitched an inning each, and junior
Justin Langer (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Senior shortstop
Michael Gruber (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) led the Johnnie bats by going 5-for-6 with two doubles and three RBI in the two games. He is now five hits away from becoming the 32nd Johnnies to reach 100 for a career.
Senior centerfielder
Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) went 4-for-7 with six runs scored and three walks, while sophomore outfielder
Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) batted 2-for-4 with three runs scored, three RBI, three walks and was plunked twice. He blasted a two-run homer in the second inning of game two.
The Johnnies travel north to Port Charlotte for a nine-inning game against No. 18/19 North Central (Ill.) at 1 p.m. ET Tuesday, March 3.
