Johnnies Set Two Records, Win 10-Team Meet at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's track and field set two records and won the 10-team Hamster Invitational, hosted by Macalester, late Friday, Feb. 7, in St. Paul.

The Johnnies won three events and recorded 26 top-five marks/times to finished with 212 points. Bethel claimed seconds (124 points) and Hamline took third (76). 

Freshman Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) won the high jump with a school-record height of 2.10 meters (6 feet, 10.75 inches), which he cleared on his third and final attempt. The mark surpassed the previous record of 2.09 meters set by Nick Welshons '15 in 2014 and is tied for first in NCAA Division III this season. Sophomore Sam Rademacher (Marshall, Minn.) and freshman Jared Meier (Jordan, Minn./Shakopee) followed in third (1.93 meters) and fourth (1.88 meters), respectively.

Junior Drew Dockendorf (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Holdingford) won the pole vault with an SJU record of 4.90 meters, which bested his previous mark of 4.88 meters set Jan. 25. The height is tied for the third-best in Division III. Freshman Joe Stauffer (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) took third (3.95 meters) in the event.

Sophomore Michael Wallace (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) edged senior Collin Trout (Cloquet, Minn.) by 0.75 of an inch to win the triple jump with a mark of 13.62 meters (to Trout's 13.60 meters).

Senior Trey Collins (Plentywood, Mont./Royalton) finished second, first among collegiate runners, with a time of 9:10.16 in the 3,000 meters. Sophomore Andy Goldsmith (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) followed in fifth (9:13.96).

Freshman Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.), freshman Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) and junior Noah Webb (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) all raced in the fourth heat of the mile run and claimed second (4:24.85), third (4:25.86) and fourth (4:25.91), respectively. Grand finished 0:00.01 behind Carleton's Ben Santos in first.

Sophomore Jack Young (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) and junior Ryan Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) placed third (23.06) and fourth (23.33), respectively, in the 200-meter dash, while freshman Jared Stanke (Anoka, Minn./Elk River) claimed third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.90) and sophomore Danny Welshons (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) took fourth (8.97).

The Johnnies' 4x200-meter relay (1:32.11; Tyler Johnson, Alex Peters, Jack Young, Ryan Miller) and 4x400-meter relay (3:40.24; Mack Maroushek, Jacob Reding, Nathan Walsh, Alexi Hensel) both finished second. The 4x200 relay crossed the finish line 0:00.10 behind Macalester, while the 4x400 was exactly one second behind Bethel.

Sophomore Eli Mollet (Jefferson, S.D./Bishop Heelan Catholic) finished third (16.50 meters) and junior Ryan Murphy (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) was close behind in fourth (15.87 meters) in the weight throw. The two flipped the order in the shot put, as Murphy took fourth (13.37 meters) and Mollet fifth (13.32 meters).

Freshmen Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.) and Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.) made the podium in fourth (1:25.25) and fifth (1:27.61), respectively, in the 600 meters.

Senior Randall Clintsman (Maplewood, Minn./Hill-Murray) finished fifth in the 60-meter dash (7.19) and sophomore Omavi Collison (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) claimed fifth in the 400-meter dash (52.36).

The Johnnies return home to host an invitational at 11 a.m. next Saturday, Feb. 15, in the Donald McNeely Spectrum.
