SJU Wins Series Opener, Can Clinch MIAC Title Saturday Afternoon

Box Score

WINONA, Minn. - Saint John's hockey scored three unanswered goals in the third period to secure a 3-1 win - the team's fourth consecutive and sixth in the last seven games - over Saint Mary's on Friday, Feb. 21, in Winona.

The victory, coupled with St. Thomas' 5-3 home win over Augsburg, places SJU (11-8-5, 8-3-4 MIAC) in the driver seat to the MIAC regular-season championship. The Johnnies can clinch the title and earn the No. 1 seed in the MIAC Playoffs with a win in the regular-season finale at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, or losses by both Concordia (2 p.m. at St. Olaf) and Augsburg (7 p.m. vs. St. Thomas) Saturday. The conference championship would be the program's ninth and first since 2013.

After a scoreless first period, Dylan Robertson gave Saint Mary's (9-13-2, 6-8-1 MIAC) a 1-0 lead on the power play 6:23 into the second.

SJU tied the game early in the third when freshman forward Jack Johnson (Bemidji, Minn.) scored on the power play, his sixth tally of the season, 3:14 in.

Freshman forward Auggie Moore (Edina, Minn.) took care of the rest with a pair of goals, his ninth and 10th of the season, to seal the victory. He drew a hooking penalty on a breakaway, put away the ensuing penalty shot with 11:25 remaining and added some insurance at the 17:11 mark.

Moore now leads the MIAC in freshman scoring with 17 points (9g/8a), which is good for third overall, and is second in goals (9) in conference play.

Senior goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 24 saves to improve to 7-7-2 on the year (31-22-9 in his career career).

SJU (1-for-6) and SMU (1-for-7) finished with an even 25 shots apiece and nearly recorded identical performances on the power play.
