NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Saint John's hockey completed the shutout sweep of St. Olaf with a 2-0 win on Saturday, Feb. 1, in Northfield.
The win, coupled with Thursday's (Jan. 30) 4-0 shutout, bumped SJU (7-7-5, 4-2-4 MIAC) into fourth place in the conference standings.
Following a scoreless first period, junior forward
Ryan Kero (Hermantown, Minn.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, his team-leading ninth tally of the season, 8:06 into the second.
Freshman forward
Jack Johnson (Bemidji, Minn.) added some insurance with an empty-netter, his fourth goal of the season, with 1:12 remaining.
Junior goaltender
Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) made eight saves before leaving the game, due to injury, with 4:41 left in the first period. Senior goaltender
Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 23 saves the rest of the way to preserve the shutout and improve to 3-6-2 on the year.
The Oles (3-15-1, 1-8-1 MIAC) out-shot SJU 31-29 but went 0-for-5 (0-for-7 on the weekend) on the power play.
The Johnnies return home to host St. Thomas (8-7-3, 5-4-1 MIAC) at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
