BOSTON, Mass. – Saint John's hockey opened the Boston Landing Tournament with a 4-2 loss to No. 8 Hobart (N.Y.) on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Warrior Ice Arena in Boston, Mass.
The Johnnies (2-5-4, 1-1-3 MIAC) face Nichols (Mass.), the tournament's host, in the consolation game at 2:40 p.m. ET Sunday, Jan. 5. The Bison (1-10, 0-7 CCC) fell to Bryn Athyn (Pa.) by a similar 4-2 score Saturday night.
Hobart (8-3-1, 3-3-0 NEHC) gained a quick 1-0 lead on a goal from Blake Coffey 1:54 into the game, but SJU responded with two straight tallies to gain a 2-1 advantage.
Junior forward
Ryan Kero (Hermantown, Minn.) tied it up at 1-1 with his team-leading seventh goal of the season, and fourth in his last two games, on a nice give-and-go from sophomore forward
Davis Kirkendall (Hamel, Minn.) at the 4:11 mark. The assist extended Kirkendall's point streak to six games (4g/4a during the stretch).
Junior defenseman
Travis Brown (Otsego, Minn.) made it 2-1 with his fourth goal of the season, on the power play, with 4:06 left in the opening frame.
P.A. Martineau tied the game 2:44 into the second period and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal halfway through the third period (10:11 mark). Lawson MacDougall clinched the win on an empty-net goal with 40 seconds remaining.
Senior goaltender
Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 34 saves in the loss as the Statesmen out-shot the Johnnies 38-30, thanks to a 15-7 margin in the third period.
