COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's track and field opened its indoor season with a win out of three teams on Saturday, Jan. 25, in Collegeville.
The Johnnies won nine events and recorded 23 top-three marks/times to finish with 184 points. Macalester followed in second (86) and Hamline took third (82). The meet also included a number of SJU alumni.
Junior
Drew Dockendorf (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Holdingford) won the pole vault with a new SJU indoor record of 4.88 meters, which edged the previous mark of 4.80 meters set by Brayden Wagner '09 in 2009. Sophomore
Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.) followed him in second (4.28 meters).
Junior
Ryan Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.92 seconds, 0.1 off the school-record time he set Dec. 7 at MSU-Mankato's Chuck Petersen Open. Sophomore
Jack Young (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) followed in third (7.17) and also took second in the 200-meter dash (23.26).
Junior
Noah Webb (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) won the 800 meters (1:58.86), while a number of freshmen shined in their SJU debuts. Freshman
Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) won the mile run in 4:31.99 and freshmen
Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.) and
Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.) went 1 (9:01.04)-2 (9:09.49) in the 3,000 meters.
The Johnnies swept the top three heights in the high jump, led by freshman
Maguire Petersen's (Hutchinson, Minn.) 2.00 meters. SJU's indoor record in the event is 2.09 meters (Nick Welshons '15 in 2014). Sophomore
Sam Rademacher (Marshall, Minn.) and freshman
Jared Meier (Jordan, Minn./Shakopee) followed in second (1.85 meters) and third (1.80 meters), respectively.
Sophomore
Michael Wallace (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) won the long jump (6.15 meters) and claimed second (13.59 meters) in the triple jump, behind senior
Collin Trout's (Cloquet, Minn.) first-place leap of 14.10 meters. Freshman
Michael Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) followed Wallace in the long jump (6.05 meters).
Sophomore
Eli Mollet (Jefferson, S.D./Bishop Heelan Catholic, Iowa) won the weight throw with a toss of 15.87 meters and placed third in the shot put (12.55 meters). Junior
Ryan Murphy (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View), meanwhile, claimed second in the shot put (12.82 meters) and third in the weight throw (14.19 meters).
Junior
Tyler Johnson (Waverly, Minn./Buffalo) crossed the finish line second in the 400-meter dash (52.31), while freshman
Jared Stanke (Anoka, Minn./Elk River) and sophomore
Danny Welshons (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) took second (8.90) and third (9.12), respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles.
The Johnnies travel to compete at Wisconsin-River Falls' Winter Classic at 11 a.m. next Saturday, Feb. 1.
