MOORHEAD, Minn. – Saint John's soccer opened its conference schedule with a 1-0 win at Concordia on Wednesday, Sept. 18, in Moorhead.

Freshman defender Matt Anderson (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) gave SJU (4-1, 1-0 MIAC) a quick 1-0 lead with his first collegiate goal, a header off a well-placed corner kick from sophomore forward Brian Pacceli (Elizabeth, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep), 3:39 into the game. The deficit was the first for Concordia (4-1, 0-1 MIAC) this season after out-scoring its opposition by a 15-1 margin in the season's first four games.

Senior goalkeeper Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) denied the Cobbers' Sam Gess on a penalty kick with 13:01 left in the first half. Keith Sullivan returned the favor for CC by stopping senior forward Patrick Erredge (St. Paul, Minn./Apple Valley) on a penalty-kick attempt for SJU in the 58th minute.

French made two saves to record his seventh collegiate shutout and improve to 3-0 on the year (16-12-4 in his career).

The Johnnies out-shot the Cobbers 9-4 (7-2 on goal) and held a narrow 4-3 edge in corner kicks. CC committed 18 fouls to SJU's seven (4-1 in yellow cards).

SJU is now 26-9-4 in its first conference game of the season since 1981, including a 12-4-2 mark away from Collegeville. The Johnnies are also 22-9-3 against Concordia dating back to 1987, including a 12-2-2 record in Moorhead.

The Johnnies return home to host a pair of games this weekend at Haws Field, beginning with a 4 p.m. match against Hamline on Saturday, Sept. 21. SJU then plays host to Wisconsin-Whitewater for a 3 p.m. non-conference matchup on Sunday, Sept. 22.
